the future of running is...

i'm a forward thinker. for better or worse i love to dream about whats next or what the future could hold. one of my most recent day dreams has been about the future of running and what it might hold. what will runners wear in 10 years? or 5 even? how will races and racing be different? how will technology change how we run?

i am fascinated with the possibilities so much that i made a link up! please join in and share what you think running will be like in the future. no idea is too crazy, silly or impossible. the whole fun of this is dreaming :) here are a few of my ideas below!

the future of running is...

1) no more race bibs - say goodbye to safety pins and bib chips. in the future, all of this will be digital - maybe an rfid chip in a bracelet or planted in your shoe or something. who knows. either way, this chip would be your id, your race timer, and even a way to track you for race photos!

2) virtual PR shadows - the way to chase your best performance won't be just a time on your watch. in the future, you'll be able to project a holographic version of yourself that will run the pace of your best time (just like the ghost in time trials in mario kart). you'll literally be able to race yourself and chase yourself to a pr! not creepy, this is totally cool.

3) insta-force fields - bugs bothering you on a run? stranger getting a little too close for comfort? did it just start to rain? in the future you'll be able to create a force field "bubble" around yourself, instantly and at any moment during a run. this will increase safety and make the running experience a little more enjoyable by fending off unexpected elements!

4) custom running shoes - gone are the days of buying and trying endless pairs of shoes to find the perfect fit. in the future you'll be able to go into any store, choose your favorite brand and have your feet molded to make the perfect fitting shoe. this custom shoe will be affordable and you'll get it almost instantly (sign me up to beta test this one, please)!

what do YOU think the future of running looks like? let me know in the comments or join in the link up! to get the code for the banner, see the very end of this post!

  2. Oh interesting! I like the idea of a PR shadow! I also agree with your first point, I think that's kind of a given!

Still thinking of mine!! Love your ideas though, especially the virtual PR. That would be kind of cool and creepy all at the same time.

  5. I hope we're closer to non-paper bibs and trackers than just in my imagination. I can only imagine how wasteful all those bibs are!

These are some awesome ideas! I especially hope the last one comes true! I know Reebok is already working on something similar: http://www.psfk.com/2013/07/reebok-heat-sneakers-uform.html?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_term=daily&utm_campaign=Daily%202013-07-09

  8. Oooo, I like your idea of an insta-force field! I could have really used that a lot lately with all the rain we've had. And lightning, you could run in lightning with one of those! :)

  9. Yes!! Thunderstorms would no longer be a problem. Or snow! Can't believe I didn't think of that one up here in Michigan :)
