how old is too old to wear pigtails?

all my short haired sisters raise your hands! you know the challenges of getting all of your hair tied tightly into one little rubberband on your head. even my longer haired sisters know this challenge. what's the easiest solution for getting your mess of hair tucked behind you so you can get stuff done?

but at what age do pigtails become... well... inappropriate?

i ask this because, as a short haired woman, i rely on pigtails to keep my hair back when i'm working out and running. but the second those piggies are on my head, i look about 10 years younger. at a golf outing last year, the bar tender at the reception specifically said to me, "i have to card you. if it wasn't for those pigtails i wouldn't need to check." (wait, is this a backhanded compliment? i can't tell)

since that day, i've pondered the question on whether or not i'm too old to wear pigtails.

clearly, i'm not the only one thinking about this. there are 1,220,000 results on google for the search query "too old for pigtails" (and there will be 1,220,001 when this blog post is live). but even scanning through various forums and threads, i couldn't find one solid answer to my pigtail question. there seems to be a solid debate in the pigtail concerned community.

i'd love more perspectives on this, so i'm presenting you with pigtail evidence below.

pigtails + hat for a casual look
pigtails + bandana for running
more pigtails for running

and a fancy look at pigtails from the back

your turn to weigh-in: how old is too old to wear pig tails?

  1. I hope there's no actual cutoff or I'm in trouble! (see avatar pic)...I turned FORTY in March and I'm thinking pigtails is my new way to push the limit on what "older people" can do. Yep, I'll be walking around at 85 with pigtails!

  2. I think you kind of rock it with the work out look but I can't take someone seriously if they are over the age of 10 and wearing pig tails casually. Working out with them when your hair is too short makes total sense but it's not a good look for women who are just out and about lol I'm a bit harsh about it but I think that bar tenders comment speaks for my point haha.

  3. I totally agree with you. And I just chopped my hair off this weekend, so I'm in the market for a new way to pull my hair back!

  4. LOL If you can own it, you can rock it!

You look cute with pigtails! And not too young cute, I really like it. In fact, I might try this myself now because I've been struggling with my itty bitty pony tail that falls out...

  6. I think it depends on the situation. Fitness situations? Pigtails always appropriate. Casual weekends? Pigtails always appropriate. Work? Pigtails probably not appropriate with business suit.

  7. They are adorable! You are never too old for pigtails, in my opinion.

  8. Oh goodness, I wouldn't worry about anyone judging your for pigtails! I wear pigtails braids when I snowboard, because otherwise my hair gets all knotted.

  9. :) Thank you.

I wish I could braid! Makes pigtails so pretty!

  10. I'm 61 and started wearing pigtails just because of the heat of the summer. My husband loves it, and it does make me look younger for some reason. I have always been thought of as younger than my age, maybe because I am short, only 4'11", so the pigtails help. I told my husband I will be an 80 year old lady with long pigtails someday.....and he smiled.

  11. This makes me smile :) Thank you for sharing. Maybe pigtails help us remind us of our youth, in some ways. I think its easy to think we can't feel youthful as we get older, but thats not true. Sometimes we need reminders that we are only as old or young as we feel.

  12. Sure, this is an old blog, but I have to say... who in the world made pigtails something only for little girls??? In my opinion, pigtails look far better on women... especially women in their 30's. I love the look of pigtails and find it maddening that people always want to relate them to little girls. I think it should be the other way around... you have to be old enough to wear them.

  13. I think you look cute, but not in a bad way, in an adult way lol. I agree with some of the others pigtails are ok for a casual weekend or working out, but not in a professional setting.
