as i'm exploring the world of gluten-free, i thought it would be helpful to share with you my findings as i figure out what gluten-free foods make great swaps for the non-gluten-free foods i love to eat. consider this the first "edition" of swaps and it's all about snacks!
snack swap #1: graham crackers for annie's gluten-free snickerdoodle bunnies
while snickerdoodle isn't a 1:1 comparison to the taste of graham crackers, the texture of these little bunnies is the closest thing i've found to the satisfying texture of a graham (especially when compared to a teddy graham). the taste of the bunnies really isn't far off grahams either, especially if you are a fan of cinnamon grahams.
snack swap #2: regular pretzel twists for glutino gluten-free pretzel twists
this swap is pretty obvious, but many folks don't know gluten-free pretzels exist. glutino's gluten-free pretzels are a little more "airy" than regular pretzels and the taste isn't 100% on, but after you start snacking on these, you won't want to stop. i would snack on these alone, or with any dip you'd normally serve with pretzels. or get crazy and dip 'em in chocolate! yum!
snack swap #3: tortilla chips for food should taste good sweet potato chips
while corn tortilla chips are essentially wheat free and gluten-free, they are not always made in dedicated gluten-free facilities. a safer bet (and seriously tastier) is to go with food should tase good chip products, specifically the sweet potato chips. these sweet potato chips are rockin' on their own or dipped in salsa. an awesome snack swap that has added benefits besides being gluten-free (hello sweet potato!). you've gotta give these a try.
snack swap #4: fiber one 90 calorie chocolate peanut butter bars for health warrior 100 calorie chia peanut butter bars
you guys. i am seriously addicted to the fiber one 90 calorie bars (all the flavors). so when i went gluten-free, i was heartbroken that i couldn't have those as a daily snack. i happened to stumble upon chia bars, specifically the peanut butter flavor, and was excited to find a suitable snack substitute. no, these do not taste or feel like brownies. but, you do get the taste of chocolate, the taste of peanut butter and the low calorie benefits just like you would with the fiber one bars. so while the texture isn't 1:1, the taste still feels like you're eating something dessert like and you get additional health benefits from the chia seeds. a solid win!
your turn! what gluten-free snacks have you found as a substitute for your favorite non-gluten-free snacks? or, if you're not gluten-free, what are your favorite snacks and their healthier substitutes?
